Mitchell 1's Heritage & Growth Journey
Mitchell 1’s story is rooted in the early days of American automotive service. Tracing our technical publishing origins back to 1918 with the groundbreaking Reed Electrical Manual of Starting, Lighting, Ignition, the modern enterprise was ignited in 1946 when Glenn Mitchell, a parts counter manager at a Chrysler dealership in San Diego, California, recognized a critical industry void.
Working late nights from his personal garage, Glenn began systematically compiling lists of automobile parts, prices, and collision illustrations to assist body shops and insurance adjusters in establishing fair, standardized estimates. That mom-and-pop innovation became Mitchell Manuals — the undisputed 'Bible' of independent repair facilities for generations. In 1958, Glenn introduced the industry's first pocket Estimator Guide (standardized labor times), followed by legendary traveling sales representatives affectionately known across America as the "Mitchell Man".
Over the decades, Mitchell 1 pioneered every major technological leap in auto repair: releasing ON-DEMAND™ (the industry's first CD-ROM computerized repair database) in 1989, launching Series 1 Windows shop management in 1995 (the direct ancestor of Manager™ SE), partnering with Snap-on Incorporated in 1998 (now owned 85% Snap-on, 15% NAPA), and transitioning fully to the cloud with ProDemand®, SocialCRM, and TruckSeries®. In 2018, San Diego County officially proclaimed March 8 as "Mitchell 1 Day" to celebrate 100 continuous years of automotive diagnostic excellence.
The Reed Electrical Manual & Specification Lineage
Mitchell 1 traces its century of automotive technical service back to 1918 with the publication of the historic Reed Electrical Manual of Starting, Lighting, Ignition by the Service Engineering Company in California. This groundbreaking reference established the earliest standardized electrical diagrams and service specifications for America's burgeoning motor vehicle service industry.
Born in a San Diego Garage: Mitchell Manuals
Glenn Mitchell, a parts counter manager at a San Diego Chrysler dealership, observed that auto body shops and insurance adjusters had no standardized way to identify factory parts or verify repair estimates. Working from his home garage, Glenn compiled and printed the industry's first collision estimating guides with exploded part illustrations and factory prices.
The First Pocket "Estimator Guide"
Twelve years after founding, Glenn Mitchell published the automotive repair industry's very first pocket "Estimator Guide" — introducing standardized labor times for common automotive repairs. This innovation laid the groundwork for the industry standard labor guides used by shops and estimators for the next six decades.
The Shop 'Bible' & Legendary Direct Sales Force
By the 1970s, Mitchell expanded beyond collision estimating into full mechanical repair, electrical schematics, and transmission diagnosis. Dedicated field representatives traveled directly from shop to shop delivering updated binders, building trusted relationships that earned them the revered industry title the "Mitchell Man" — a relationship-first philosophy that defines Mitchell 1 to this day.
First Heavy Duty Truck Manual (TruckSeries Roots)
Mitchell published the first edition of the Mitchell Manual for Light, Medium & Heavy Duty Truck Maintenance. This landmark publication expanded comprehensive diagnostic, labor, and maintenance coverage to commercial fleet vehicles Class 4 through Class 8, laying the direct cornerstone for modern TruckSeries®.
ON-DEMAND™: First Computer-Based Repair System
Mitchell pioneered the automotive digital era by creating ON-DEMAND™ — the automotive industry's very first computerized repair information database on CD-ROM. For the first time, technicians could search wiring diagrams, technical service bulletins (TSBs), and labor times in seconds instead of flipping through heavy binders.
Series 1 Windows Launch (Origins of Manager SE)
Mitchell introduced Series 1, the premier Windows-based shop management software built specifically for independent repair shops. Designed to track repair orders, parts inventory, technician efficiency, and invoicing, this landmark software evolved directly into today's industry-standard Manager™ SE platform.
Snap-on Partnership & Rebranding to Mitchell 1
Snap-on Incorporated acquired majority ownership (today held 85% by Snap-on and 15% by NAPA) to create the Mitchell Repair Information Company. In 2001, the company officially rebranded its name from Mitchell Repair to Mitchell 1, pairing Snap-on's world-class diagnostic tool engineering with Mitchell's vast OEM technical database.
OnDemand5.com Web SaaS & Digital Farewell to Paper
In 2002, Mitchell 1 pioneered web-based delivery with OnDemand5.com, granting auto repair shops instant browser access to OEM repair procedures, wiring diagrams, and technical service bulletins. In 2010, Mitchell 1 printed its final paper labor time guide, completing the industry's historic transition into 100% cloud-delivered intelligence.
SocialCRM Automated Shop Marketing Launched
Launched SocialCRM, an automated customer retention platform built specifically for automotive repair shops. Connecting directly with Manager SE, SocialCRM delivers automated service reminders, text messaging, verified consumer reviews on Google, and dedicated marketing support agents to fill service bays with repeat, high-margin customers.
ProDemand® & SureTrack® RealFix® Launch
Mitchell 1 released ProDemand®, its flagship cloud diagnostic platform powered by patented 1Search™ technology. Integrated with the SureTrack® expert technician community, ProDemand pairs OEM diagnostic flowcharts with over 1 billion verified real-world fixes submitted and confirmed by professional master technicians across North America.
Centennial Celebration: "Mitchell 1 Day" Proclamation
Mitchell 1 marked 100 continuous years of automotive technical service (1918–2018). In recognition of this rare centennial milestone and the company's profound contribution to the automotive service industry, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors officially declared March 8, 2018, as "Mitchell 1 Day".
